Emerging Home Décor Trends of 2022
The beginning of a new year brings with it new beginnings, fresh outlooks, and upcoming trends. While trends may come and go, we like to look at ways to incorporate them into our designs in a timeless and chic way. This year, two words came to mind as we investigated 2022’s upcoming trends: Sanctuary, and Statement. Now those two words may seem total opposites, so let us look into them further.
Over the past few years, we have been spending more and more time inside our homes. Spaces that once served as places for entertaining and relaxing have now been forced to become places for learning, teaching, and working. To balance out the extra stress and uncertainty we now face in our homes, we yearn for our own little slice of serenity. We are seeing that need for a sanctuary in all aspects of home design, from softer paint colors and curved architecture to the introduction of more natural elements.
Color trends this year evoke that need for sanctuary, including Behr Paint’s “Breezeway”, Sherwin Williams’ “Evergreen Fog”, and Benjamin Moore’s “October Mist”. Softer, more muted palettes with natural hues and warm undertones are taking over. Watch for warm neutrals to be on the rise, bringing back tans, beiges, and browns.
Shape is an element of design that can often be overlooked, but this year we are able to notice the subtle changes in its trends. While softer shades of color are in trend, so are softer shapes. Think round vases, arched doorways, curved sofas. A huge trend recently has been organic shaped taper candles. The softness of these shapes gives us the essence of sanctuary.
We can’t talk about trends without talking about texture. One of our favorite ways to upscale your home design is through texture. With our trend of sanctuary, we are seeing more natural elements used in design such as faux dried florals, warm woods, hair on hide, travertine, pampas grass, marble accents, clay pottery, and more.
What we're loving about this trend:
What to be on the lookout for in order to utilize this trend for timeless décor:
When you think of creating a statement in interior and home design, you might immediately think of bright pops of color or large pieces of furniture, or even more common recently, a statement wall. While those are all great ways of bringing interest to your home, this year’s trends are slightly different but can still create a statement in your home.
While it has become common to use paint colors to create focal points in your home, this year we are trying something different. Create a slightly more subtle statement with your paint by using it an unexpected way. We’ve seen interior doors painted a unique color, but what about painting your entire room; walls, ceiling, trim, and doors all one color? This monochromatic look is rising through the trends, and we are loving it. Instead of creating one wall as a focal point, the entire room becomes the focal point. Another way to use color as statement is in your countertops and vanities. Find a countertop with strong veins of color in it and pull out that color in the paint for your walls. Another trend in colors this year has to do with metallic finishes. Mixed metals have been on trend for a few years now, but they are starting to become more of a highlight in a home’s design.
As we mentioned before, curved sofas are trending this year due to their unique shape and conversation starting design. Use shape as a statement in your home by switching from the norm. Use curved details on your cabinet doors, use a uniquely shaped chandelier in your dining room, or find tile with a fun shape for your bathroom floor.
Interesting textures have become more and more popular these past few years and can easily become a focal point when used correctly. Fluted vases, woven light fixtures, sheepskin chairs, and textured walls are all ways to utilize texture to make a statement in your home.
What we're loving about this trend:
"For me, design is all about creating an impact in a new and fresh way. I love the idea of making that statement in different and often subtle ways."
-Alyssa
"When talking about making a statement in your home, it doesn't have to be with a bold color. A board and batten wall painted in the same color as your walls, makes that statement as does a white vase filled with white pampas grass against a neutral color wall."
- Angie
What to be on the lookout for in order to utilize this trend for timeless décor:
- Don’t feel like you must go big, bright, or contrasting to create a statement. Often, all you need to do is catch the viewer’s eye by doing something different than the usual.
- When playing with shape, always remember to keep scale in mind. If you are repeating a shape in several different ways in your room, vary the sizes of that shape to keep your design from looking too repetitive.
- Don’t be afraid of where you might find inspiration. Most statement pieces are often something that catches your eye, and you can’t stop thinking about.
