Wow! I can’t believe the holiday season is behind us! Even though we've had Christmas up at the store since the beginning of November, Christmas itself seemed in the distance. Now, suddenly, it's in the past. I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of Christmas decor that I put up for the holidays, and because of that, I have to pack away a lot of my everyday decor. As I start to take down my Christmas, I am left with blank walls and empty shelves. This stark contrast to the normal actually helps me look at my room as a blank canvas. My painted walls look chipped, marred and the rooms look tired! 'Tis the season for taking stock and revamping my home. My spring cleaning usually happens in winter, and usually right after Christmas. January, February and March are to me cold, boring months. I love warm beautiful weather, so these cold months have me raring to refresh my house. If you agree but don’t know how to start, here is my of way of doing just that. Step 1: Choose a RoomI usually start in one room and work my way through my house. It doesn't matter which room you tackle first, whether you pick the most difficult room in your home or the easiest. Just start. Step 2: Review the purpose of the Room Is it being used for what I want it to be used for? Can the room be repurposed for something else? Have the kids grown up and moved out? Don’t use your formal living room and want to have a more useful space? Can that screened-in porch be renovated to a 3 season room? Is there a better reconfiguration for this space? Really reevaluate and see if you are using your rooms to fit your lifestyle and needs. There is nothing worse than a room that has no purpose or that makes things harder on you. Step 3: Deep CleanOnce I decide on the use of the room, the next thing I do is clean out all drawers, closets, shelves and bookcases. Do I use all these items or do they need to be donated or thrown away? Should these items stay in this room or is there a better place for them? This can be the hardest part sometimes, but it is also one of the most necessary parts for a refresh. Step 4: The Design RefreshThis last step is where things get more fun! Take the time to decide if you still like the overall style of your room and the items in it. Do the walls need to be repainted or would a new color liven up the space? What pieces of furniture still work in this room? What pieces need to be replaced or what new items are needed? Could the room use new lighting? Once decisions have been made, here is where your style and your personality comes through to your space. Artwork, mirrors, home décor items, lamps, and personal mementos are the next layer. Adding these items dramatically transforms your room, creating a cozy and warm space. And that's a wrap! That original, tired room you just finished looks sensational! Now what are you waiting on? Another room awaits!
